NATURE OF INCIDENT: Building Fire
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 7/5/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 10:24 AM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 4511 E Superior St
At 10:24 AM on July 5th, the Duluth Fire Dept was dispatched to a report of possible smoke in a business at 4511 E Superior St in the Lakeside neighborhood. Lakeside Engine Company #6 was the first to arrive and found the middle unit of a 5 unit building fully charged with smoke. The business located in the fire unit is the Little Sweet Things Boutique.
Firefighters gained access by breaking a large glass window next to the entrance door and were able to extinguish the fire within a few minutes of their arrival. Fans were set up to vent the heavy smoke from the business while firefighters checked for extension to the adjoining businesses on either side of the fire unit. Light smoke was found in both the Lakeside Bakery and Pete's Lakeside Barber Shop. Fans were set up to clear these businesses also. Other businesses in the building were not affected by the fire.
The fire did minimal structural damage to the building but there was heavy smoke damage to Little Sweet Things Boutique resulting in a loss of almost all of their merchandise. Little Sweet Things Boutique was not open for business prior to the fire. They were scheduled for a July 15th opening. The bakery and barbershop had light smoke damage to their contents and interior walls. There was no fire or heat damage in either of these businesses.
A total of 18 firefighters on 7 apparatus responded to fight the fire. No occupants or firefighters were injured during the fire. The damage loss estimate for the fire is $50,000 for the building and $120,000 for contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshalls Office.
