SUBJECT: Structure fire
BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire
CASE NO.: 20-00007253
INCIDENT DATE: 7/13/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 9:53 AM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 917 N. 88th Ave w.
This morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire. The caller then went on to say that there was an explosion and that there were persons trapped. Due to the nature of the incident and the multi-residential occupancy involved, a second alarm was called to respond. This action dispatches more fire companies to the scene in an attempt to get ahead of the situation.
The initial unit on scene reported a large amount of fire in the back of the 6-plex building. They reported shortly afterward that all persons were able to make it out of the home and that everyone was accounted for.
Companies arriving to the scene were assigned to search all units of the building and to assess fire extension. The fire had reached three of the units and had gotten into the attic space before it was stopped. Other companies assisted in putting out the fire and venting the heat and smoke. The building was monitored for fire extension and securing personal items inside the affected living units.
There were no injuries to report. Damage assessments to the building and property are estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Any questions relating to this incident may be directed to the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office.
Fire Companies from Gary/New Duluth, Spirit Valley, Lincoln Park, Downtown and UMD responded to this incident. Duluth Police, Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service, Comfort Systems, Minnesota Power and Minnesota State Patrol were also on scene to render assistance.
