SUBJECT: Marina Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Boat Fire
CASE NO.: 20-00006979
INCIDENT DATE: 7/6/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 4:15 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1025 Minnesota Ave
At 4:15 this afternoon, the Duluth Fire Department responded for a boat on fire that was tied up to a dock in the Harbor Cove Marina. First arriving units found heavy smoke and active flame coming from a 40 foot sailboat tied up to a dock.
The boat owner had tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher, but could not overcome the flames. The US Coast Guard was on scene and stated that they also discharged an extinguisher in the cabin area.
Initial objectives were to ensure public safety and protect other boats and property in the vicinity. Duluth Fire Number One Engine made entry and extinguished the flames. Marine 19 was also on scene to provide water supply.
The fire was extinguished with damage to the cabin area inside the boat. It was decided that the boat would be pulled from the water and any water on board would be taken off on land for environmental reasons.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office. Any inquiries regarding this incident should be directed to that office.
There were no injuries to report. Damages are estimated at $40,000
Fire Companies from Downtown, UMD, and Lincoln Park responded to this incident. The US Coast Guard was also on scene and rendered assistance.
