Lifeguards to return to Park Point on July 10

[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth and the Duluth Area Family YMCA will once again provide lifeguards on Park Point this summer. Lifeguards will return to the beach on a limited basis, Friday through Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Lifeguards services will begin on July 10 and go through Labor Day.

“The City is grateful to the Duluth Area Family YMCA for their continued partnership in providing lifeguards at Park Point,” said director of Parks, Properties, and Libraries, Jim Filby-Williams. “This is an important service that provides education, water safety, and comfort for those who use the beach.”

Sara Cole, President and CEO of the Duluth Area Family YMCA, echoed Filby-Williams comments, “The YMCA is once again proud to partner with the city of Duluth to ensure that all members of our community can more safely enjoy Lake Superior at Park Point this summer.”

Until lifeguards are back on duty, and while they are not supervising the beach during the week, officials ask the public to follow red flag warnings and use their best judgment when going in the water.

“Being prepared for any emergency can be life-saving the next time you're at the beach,” Duluth Fire Department Assistant Chief Brent Consie said. “Pay attention to where you are at on the beach, know where the rescue stations are at so that if you need to throw a life ring to someone in need, you can. On red flag days, regardless of your swim experience, stay out of the water.”

The public is encouraged to monitor beach and weather conditions by visiting www.parkpointbeach.org. The website is updated daily, and monitors rip currents, red flag warnings, water temperature, and other important information that would be important for beachgoers to review before going to the beach.
