A portion of the DWP Trail around the Ely’s Peak Tunnel to close for three-weeks for rock-scaling
[Duluth, MN] A contractor starting today, May 22, began mobilizing on the DWP Trail and will begin rock-scaling on Monday, May 25, at the Ely’s Peak tunnel. Rock-scaling is a process of removing any loose and dangerous rocks. The tunnel, in addition to hiking and climbing routes around the work area, will be closed for approximately three weeks so that work can be completed. The contractor will begin work at the tunnel and work their way east towards Spirit Mountain. During this time, the contractor will be dropping rock and trees onto the grade, which is the reason for the closure. This work is a part of the DWP Mini-Master Plan
The Climbers and Superior Hiking Trail parking lots on Becks Road will have signage, in addition to each trail leading to the tunnel communicating this closure, and hazards of work being done for those wanting to use the trails.
Work is expected to be loud at times, as the contractor will be using drilling equipment to meet the goals of the project.
