At 1:01 PM today, the Duluth Fire Department responded for the report of a fire alarm sounding. While responding, units were informed that a fire sprinkler had activated and the building was evacuating.
Initial companies reported that there was active fire in the building inside a common kitchen area on the first floor. Firefighters located and extinguished a fire in an enclosed kitchen space. Firefighters assured building evacuation and ventilated the area of smoke and heat.
Damage to the building included fire and smoke damage, and water damage from a fire sprinkler that discharged and aided in extinguishing the fire.
The cause of the fire was accidental. Damage to the building is estimated at $10,000. There were no injuries to report.
Fire companies from UMD, Woodland, Lakeside and Headquarters fire stations responded to the call. City of Duluth and UMD Police Departments, as well as Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service also responded to offer assistance.
