BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Car Accident
CASE NO.: 20-00004014
INCIDENT DATE: 4/17/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 20:39
INCIDENT LOCATION: 4000 London Road

At 8:39 this evening, the Duluth Fire Department responded for the report of a car that hit a building. As units arrived, they found a car that had crashed into a multiple unit assisted living residence. The car had penetrated the building and came to rest roughly 25 feet inside. The car went through an outer window and an interior party wall between two units. In total, two living units, a hallway and a common area were damaged.

The driver of the car was extricated by Duluth Fire Department. Both Duluth Fire and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service packaged and treated the patient. The driver suffered multiple injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital.

A resident of one of the affected units was also taken to a local hospital for examination. The patient was not hit by the car, but suffered some minor injuries.

All residents and staff were accounted for. There were no other injuries to report.

The stability of the building was not compromised. The building was examined and found to have light damage to structural members but extensive damage to an exterior wall, interior units and the area in the vicinity of the accident. Damage estimate is set at $75,000 for the building due to structural and water damage and $10,000 for the vehicle.

The residents were sheltered in place. The building is habitable and utilities have been restored. Construction services were on scene and beginning to repair the building as soon as the vehicle was removed.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by Duluth Police.

Fire companies from Lakeside, UMD and Headquarters responded to this incident.
