SUBJECT: Structure fire
BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire
CASE NO.: 20-01429
INCIDENT DATE: 2/9/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 12:21 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 5348 London Rd.

At 12:21 this afternoon, the Duluth Fire Department responded to 5348 London Road for the report of a fire in an attic. Initial reports stated that the home was occupied, and that there was still someone inside the house. The first company arriving on scene reported smoke coming from the attic and eaves of the house and attempted to make contact with the building occupants outside. They were quickly told by persons on scene that everyone was safely out of the house.

Initial Fire Department efforts were to search the house for occupants while a second company advanced a hose line and located the fire. The fire was found in an attic space on the third level, and was quickly extinguished. Primary and secondary searches conducted during fire control confirmed that there were no persons or pets inside. There were no injuries to report.

The Duluth Police Department closed London Road to automobile traffic between 53rd and 54th Avenues East at the request of the Fire Department. London Road was closed to traffic for approximately 2 hours and has since been reopened.

Damage to the building is estimated at $20,000 due to the structure damage inside the attic. Damage to contents is estimated at $5,000. The homeowners were able to occupy the home after the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Any questions associated with this incident should be directed to the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office.

Fire Companies from Lakeside, UMD, Woodland and Headquarters Stations responded to this fire and remained on scene for three hours. The Duluth Police Department, Mayo Ambulance Service and Minnesota Power also responded to this incident for assistance.
