SUBJECT: Structure Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Clint Reff
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire
CASE NO.: 20-0333
INCIDENT DATE: 1/10/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 0915
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2131 Miller Creek Dr
At 09:15 this morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2131 Miller Creek Dr. Upon arrival smoke was seen coming from the eaves of a single story town-home. The lone occupant smelled smoke and exited the structure. Crews advanced a handline through the front door and knocked down the main body of the kitchen fire. The ceiling was pulled and revealed the fire had advanced to the attic. The remaining fire was extinguished and an insulation vacuum was used to remove the smoldering insulation. We received a report of four cats being inside the residence. Three of the cats were removed, while the fourth cat made it out on its own.
Initial damage estimates were determined to be $60,000 for room and contents. The homeowners were unable to remain at the town-home and have made other housing arrangements. The Duluth Fire Marshal's office investigated the fire and confirmed the cause as an accidental cooking fire. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.
Fire companies from Headquarters Station, Miller Hill Mall, Spirit Valley, and U.M.D. Stations responded to the fire and remained on scene for two hours.
