INCIDENT LOCATION: 700 Garfield Ave
At 15:34 PM on Friday October 11th, the Duluth Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm at 700 Garfield Ave.
The first arriving fire company found smoke exiting the rear of the Goodwill building. They immediately upgraded the call to a full alarm response. The crew stretched a handline and began fire attack on pallets of assorted goods. Crews were assisted in fire containment by an activated sprinkler head. The fire was brought under control and crews remained on scene for just over an hour overhauling additional pallets of sorted goods.
The Goodwill store was open at the tome of the fire and people were evacuating as crews arrived. Some of the work staff had to be assisted with exiting. The DTA arrived and assisted with shelter while some of the staff awaited rides. The store was set to close for the day and only key personnel remained on scene.
The Duluth Fire Marshal's office arrived on scene and began an investigation in to the cause and origin of the fire. Any further information will be provided by their office.
Fire companies from Headquarters Station, Two Station, and Eight Station responded. Duluth Police Department as well as the Duluth Transit Authority were on scene to assist. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The store is expected to reopen at normal hours.
