SUBJECT: Kitten Rescue!
BY: Assistant Fire Chief, Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Public Assist
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 7/17/2019
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth, MN
This is a report narrative from the responding Fire Captain at our Station 7 here in Duluth, Minnesota:
[Number] 7 Engine was called for a public assist request to help a kitten stuck in a storm drain. 7 Engine arrived to find three young girls who when walking with their father, heard a kitten crying from inside the drain.
We removed the top grate and sent fire fighter Jeremy Helm down inside the drain but the kitten wouldn’t come to him. Next, we used our thermal imaging camera to see the kitten inside a small pipe, but it still wouldn’t come out. Fire fighter Andy Beck then took an SCBA bottle [firefighter breathing air tank] and went down the line to the next grate. By opening the air tank, our intent was to use the loud air escaping from the bottle to scare the kitten back towards the drain opening. The plan worked! The noise made the little guy run right into Fire Fighter Helm's arms!
A neighbor arrived, brought over a small cage told us she would take it to the vet for shots and a check-up. She would then try to adopt it out.
