SUBJECT: Dangerous Rip Currents; Red Flag Warning
BY: Assistant Fire Chief, Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Red Flag Warning
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 7/6/2019
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Park Point Beaches
Due to the High Risk of Rip Currents today, the Duluth Fire Department is issuing a warning for dangerous swimming conditions for Park Point beaches effective immediately and continuing until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. This warning means that wind and wave conditions can support rip currents. Rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the water. Stay out of the water regardless of your swimming experience.
Winds and waves will be favorable for the development of dangerous rip currents today on the beaches of Minnesota and Wisconsin Points, including Park Point Beach. While wave heights may not be large in the morning, it is very likely strong rip currents will develop due to favorable east-northeast wind direction and increasing wind speeds today.
There are currently no lifeguards at Park Point, and red flags are flying along the beach to indicate the dangerous swimming condition.
Flag locations are: 12th St beach, Lafayette Square, and Park Point beach. You will be notified if swimming conditions improve before this warning expires.
More information on conditions and rip currents can be found by visiting the Park Point Beach website at www.parkpointbeach.org.
