At 9:16 AM Friday, May 31st the Duluth Fire Department responded for the report of smoke inside of the Motel 6 at 200 South 27th Ave West in Duluth.  Motel staff were able to alert all guests and the building was evacuated. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke in a hallway and multiple rooms including a utility room. The utility room ceiling had been damaged and a window broken due to a possible small explosion. Firefighters quickly extinguished all exposed fire and removed interior and exterior wall coverings to find more fire in several locations that were also extinguished. Firefighters remained on scene for two hours and the fire is still under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.  

Initial damage estimates to the building are $100,000. Fire Companies from Lincoln Park, Downtown, Spirit Valley and UMD Area responded to the incident. The DFD was assisted on scene by the DPD, Duluth Public Works and Utilities and Minnesota Power.
