This afternoon, the Duluth Fire Department responded to the report of black smoke in the area of 1st Avenue West. Crews arriving on scene reported heavy smoke on Number One Alley and began making entry from the alley side of the building. A fire encompassing one quarter of the building on the second floor was found and quickly extinguished. Fire damage was limited to the upper floor and cockloft area in the rear of the building. 

Primary and secondary searches revealed no occupants inside the building. Initial damage estimate for the building and contents is determined to be $75,000. The incident is being invesitgated by the Fire Marshall's Office. 

Smoke damage is limited to the fire building. Smoke had to be removed from the adjoining Skywalk, but the area is now open for normal use. Adjacent buildings suffered no fire or smoke damage.

There were no civillian or firefighter injuries. Fire companies from Downtown, Lincoln Park, Spirit Valley and UMD/Chester responded and remained on scene for about 2.5 hours.
