KEY TALKING POINTS FOR MAYOR’S EVENT

Why we are here?

To celebrate the contributions of our local National Service members who provide enormous impact in our community, as well as to recognize the service of the many volunteers who help fuel our local non-profit agencies.

Who are we celebrating?

We recognize those who serve to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement. We celebrate those who are serving to create sustainable and resilient communities. We honor those who give of themselves and their time to tutor and mentor youth, support food banks and homeless shelters, restore parks and public lands, manage community volunteers and so much more.

What is National Service?

National Service is also commonly referred to as AmeriCorps.  AmeriCorps is a program coordinated by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency for service and volunteering that engages millions of citizens in service at more than 50,000 locations across the country through the AmeriCorps (including VISTA and NCCC), Senior Corps (including Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP), and other programs.

Why is service important?

Given the many needs facing our communities – and the fiscal constraints facing government at all levels – mayors are increasingly turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost-effective solution to meet local needs. We know we can’t do it alone.

What can you do to get involved?

National service and volunteerism shows the best of the American spirit – people turning toward problems instead of away, working together to find community solutions. Today, as we thank national service members and volunteers for their commitment, let us all pledge to do our part to strengthen our county through service and volunteering.
