SUBJECT: House Fire-4603 Colorado St
BY: Assistant Fire Chief Jim Ray
NATURE OF INCIDENT: House Fire
CASE NO.: 10-003222
INCIDENT DATE: 5/19/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 3:12PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 4603 Colorado St
At 3:12 PM, the Duluth Fire Department reponded to a house fire at 4603 Colorado St. in the Lakeside neighborhood. Firefighters encountered thick smoke and flames venting from the attached garage of a one level home. Immediately the garage door collapsed from the heat releasing a wall of flames fifteen feet high. A barbeque grill's propane cylinder added to the fire by burning a hole through the front corner of the garage like a giant blow torch. Within a few minutes the fire was extinguished except for a few small burning areas in the attic.
Damage was concentated in the garage. Fortunately, only smoke had entered the living area of the home. Two holes were made in the ceiling and one in the roof to access the attic. Damages to the structure and contents are over $50,000.
While the fire was attacked, a search of the house found no one inside. The owners were at work and arrived shortly after being contacted. They have insurance and will stay with relatives.
The Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause.
