Invasive Plant Removal at Lincoln Park Planned This Fall

[Duluth, MN] – The Duluth Stream Corps of Community Action Duluth will begin removal of invasive species for the City of Duluth this fall in Lincoln Park. From October to November 2018, the public can expect foliar spray of buckthorn and honeysuckle followed by tree planting. In summer 2019, the group will return to remove an invasive Wild Parsnip patch just above 10th Street in Lincoln Park and continue replanting of trees. The removal of invasive plants allows native vegetation to flourish and creates a healthy ecosystem. This project was funded in part by a U.S. Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant, focused on restoration of the Miller Creek watershed as a result of the June 2012 flood.

The public may notice piles of cut buckthorn around the project locations in Lincoln Park as noxious weeds are left on-site to prevent seed spread. Due to the close proximity of neighboring homes near Lincoln Park, the cuttings will not be burned. Buckthorn will be left in piles about 4 ft. x 4 ft. x 3 ft. to make them as little of a visible disturbance as possible in the summer months. The City requests residents to not touch or remove the piles of buckthorn. Contact with Wild Parsnip should be avoided as well since the plant's sap has the ability to inflict burns to the skin and can be transferred to pets.
