City of Duluth Steps Up the Fight Against Aquatic Invasive Species

Demonstration Planned for September 7 at 2 pm

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth is taking an innovative step towards fighting the spread of aquatic invasive species in our waterways. Munger Landing will be the site of Duluth’s first “CD3 Station,” a waterless boat cleaning station to help reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). This project is part of the larger Wildlife Forever Clean Drain Dry Initiative, a statewide campaign to educate outdoor recreational users on how to prevent the spread of invasive species. Strategic communications, marketing, outreach and educational services will also be tailored to inform the public about AIS and prevention efforts.

The City will host a demonstration for the public and media on September 7, 2018 at 2 PM at Munger Landing, located at the end of Clyde Avenue in the Smithville neighborhood.

The waterless, user operated cleaning equipment includes a wet/dry vacuum, blower, and tethered hand tools that are accessible and user-friendly.  The CD3 station is not your average cleaning station, the system has internet connected technology to allow natural resource managers to track visitor use and functionality. The Stations also offer a digital kiosk that offers cleaning tutorial and can be customized to provide public outreach on AIS issues that are affecting local waterways.

The project was made possible by Wildlife Forever and state funds through St. Louis County.
