SUBJECT: Structure Fire- Duluth
BY: Assistant Fire Chief, Clint Reff
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 18-8106
INCIDENT DATE: 8/10/2018
INCIDENT TIME: 01:56
INCIDENT LOCATION: 331 E 5th St
At 01:56 hours this morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire. Crews were en route to another possible fire as this call came in. Responding units diverted to this call. Upon arrival, we found heavy smoke coming from the roof of a two-story duplex. All occupants from both units had evacuated prior to our arrival. Crews stretched lines to the upstairs unit and began knockdown of the main body of fire. Primary searches were completed and confirmed the units were void of occupants. Firefighters remained on scene for just over three hours to remove smoldering insulation from the attic space.
The occupants of both units were not able to remain in the duplex. The American Red Cross is assisting two of the residents, while the other tenants are staying with family. Initial damage for this fire is being listed as $30,000 for structure and $20,000 for contents.
There were no civilian or firefighters. The Duluth Fire Marshal's office was on scene and investigated this fire. The cause of this fire has been determined to be accidental-electrical in nature.
Fire companies from Headquarters, Lincoln Park, and U.M.D. Stations responded to the fire. Duluth Police as well as Minnesota Power were on scene assisting with this operation.
Any additional information will be provided by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
