Duluth's Irving Park to Undergo Renovations

(A St. Louis River Corridor Project)

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation division is informing the public about upcoming construction in Irving Park, in Duluth's Irving neighborhood, which is scheduled to start next week. The park sustained irreparable damage following the June 2012 flood. Community club and neighborhood volunteers assisted with cleaning the site and most recently participated in a planning process to develop a mini-master plan. The Irving community members have also helped raise funds to support the revitalization of the park. KTM Paving, Inc. will begin mobilization for improvements at Irving Park starting May 7. The project scope includes:

  • New accessible walkways throughout the park
  • Porta-potty slab and screen
  • New stairs to the parking lot
  • Removal of old playground and installation of new in June 2018
  • Relocation of the basketball court
  • Site lighting
  • Plaza gathering space adjacent to the garage/concession building

Residents can expect to see 5-10 workers at any time at Irving Park from May 7th – July 30th.  Residents will also notice truck traffic in the construction area and increased noise as a result. The park will be closed except for scheduled field and pathway uses during the duration of the construction.

This project is part of the larger St. Louis River Corridor Initiative and is based on the recommendations of the City Council approved Irving Park Mini-Master Plan. The St. Louis River Corridor Neighborhood Parks funds are activated by a required $10,000 match from community partners through cash donation, grant funds, in-kind volunteer hours, and in-kind materials. The Irving Park match was met and exceeded by the Irving Community Club’s donation of $30,000 towards the project. The Irving Mini-Master Plan is available for review at http://www.duluthmn.gov/st-louis-river-corridor/neighborhood-parks/

Please direct questions to Lisa Luokkala, Senior Parks Planner, at lluokkala@duluthmn.gov or 218-730-4312. A project update will be provided at the Irving Community Club meeting on May 22nd at 6pm at City Center West, 5830 Grand Avenue.
