INCIDENT LOCATION: 603 E 1st ST
At 18:12 hours this evening, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a kitchen fire at 601 E 1st ST. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from an upstairs apartment. Crews made entry into the affected apartment and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. Primary and secondary searches were completed, and it was confirmed that all four apartments had been evacuated.
The fire extended into the floor/ceiling assembly, and some of the adjoining rooms. Other units in the complex experienced smoke and water damage. Initial damage estimates are $50,000 for the structure and $25,000 for contents.
A neighboring tenant was transported to a local hospital with a report of difficulty breathing. There were no other injuries sustained. None of the residents were able to remain in their apartments. They are being assisted by the Duluth Chapter of the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire was determined to be an unattended grease fire.
Fire companies from Headquarters Station, Lincoln Park, and UMD Station responded to the fire. DPD along with Fire Administration staff were on scene assisting.
