Just before midnight on February 6th the Duluth Fire Department responded to a second structure fire at 1509 99th Avenue West. The first arriving fire rig, 10 Engine from the Gary Fire Station found initially the porch on fire on the 99th Ave side but quickly established that most of the interior of the main floor was heavily involved in fire. A report of all people evacuated from the home was confirmed on scene and Duluth firefighters made an aggressive fire attack but were hindered by the fire load in the home. The fire was knocked down and firefighters searched for fire that possibly was travelling in small void spaces in the home.
There were six dogs residing in the home at the time of this fire and while two dogs were able to escape, 3 dogs perished in the fire and one is unaccounted for at this time. This fire caused very extensive damage to the structure and nearly all the contents. Initial damage estimate is $100,000 dollars to the structure and $50,000 to contents.
There were no Firefighter injuries and while the occupants were able to escape, 3 dogs perished in the fire.
The Duluth Fire Marshals office has determined the cause of this fire as accidental and any future statement will be provided by that office.
Nineteen Firefighters from three Fire Stations fought this fire for just over two hours. Gold Cross ambulance service stood by initially as a safety precaution for the Firefighters.
