NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 17-11015
INCIDENT DATE: 10/15/2017
INCIDENT TIME: 00:53
INCIDENT LOCATION: 320 N 21st Ave W
AT 00:53 this morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 320 N 21st Ave W. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire in the attic of a two-story duplex. The duplex was being evacuated during our arrival. A report of a second house starting on fire resulted in a second alarm being called. Crews made entry into the duplex while ventilating the roof. Primary and secondary searches were completed, and one dog was located and safely removed. One cat remains unaccounted for.
The fire extended through the roof, and collapsed the ceiling. Crews were forced to exit the building and continue fire attack from the exterior. As the fire was darkened down, crews were able to resume interior attack and extinguish the remaining hot spots. Initial damage estimates are $35,000 for the structure, and $15,000 for contents.
There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. The occupants are unable to return to the residence at this time. The American Red Cross assisted in housing for some of the residents. The Duluth Fire Marshal's office is investigating as to origin and cause of the fire.
Fire companies from Headquarters Station, Lincoln Park Station, and Spirit Valley Station responded on the initial call. UMD as well as Miller Mall Stations responded on the second alarm. Fire crews remained on scene for just over three hours. DPD, Gold Cross Ambulance, as well as Minnesota Power were on scene assisting.
No further information is available at this point.
