Public Meeting to Discuss Chester Creek Restoration Project

September 27, 2017 at 5:30 pm

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth is partnering with the St. Louis County Soil and Water District to restore and stabilize Chester Creek, one of 14 designated trout habitats in Duluth that was dramatically impacted during the 2012 flood. The public is invited to attend an informational meeting on the Chester Creek Dam Removal and Stream Restoration Project that is scheduled to begin on October 2nd of this year. The goals of this project are to remove the dams, restore the creek channel, provide trout habitat, and plant a healthy riparian area. The City is also putting in a new pedestrian bridge at lower end of the restoration reach (where the lower dam is presently located).

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has lifted the restricted work window for trout spawning, therefore, the work can commence in October, after a majority of the Park’s popular activities and events are over for the summer.

The informational meeting will take place on:

Wednesday, September 27th

5:30-7:30 pm

Grant Recreation Center

901 E 11th St

The City is also offering a “walk-through” of the project at 10 am on the same day - September 27th - for those who cannot make the evening meeting or who would like to go over the plans in a non-meeting setting.

If you have questions please contact Jim Shoberg, Project Coordinator, at jshoberg@duluthmn.gov or (218) 730-4316 or Kate Kubiak at the South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District at kate.kubiak@southstlouisswcd.org or at (218) 723-4946.
