Additional Storm Damage Clean Up Planned in Hartley Park This Winter

[Duluth, MN] – It’s been over one year since the summer 2016 windstorm and Hartley Park is still in need of some timber care. Some potential hazards remain from downed trees in a remote 30-acre section in the northwest corner of the park. Work crews contracted by St. Louis County hope to remove additional downed trees this winter to prevent potential fire hazards and dangerous conditions for the public.

The City of Duluth is working with the St. Louis County Land and Minerals Department, who owns land abutting Hartley Park, to ensure public safety and future growth of the forest by removing only damaged, downed and hazardous trees.  Downed trees near trout streams, wetland areas and known vernal pool areas will have no timber taken. This process will actually help protect these delicate environments.

While work is occurring, the public is requested to stay clear of the project zone for safety reasons and because of activity from heavy equipment that will be used on site. The County will be accessing the Hartley Park clean up area by use of a temporary  gravel road. The public can expect to see logging trucks and hauling activity on Howard Gnesen Road once the project starts.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim Shoberg, Project Coordinator, at jshoberg@duluthmn.gov or 218-730-4316.
