SUBJECT: Park Point Water Rescue Effort
BY: Assistant Fire Chief's Office
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Water Rescue
CASE NO.: 17-008428
INCIDENT DATE: 8/10/2017
INCIDENT TIME: 16:26
INCIDENT LOCATION: Park Point - Lake Superior
At 1626 hours this afternoon, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a possible water rescue situation on Lake Superior - near the Park Point Beach House. Upon arrival, a female juvenile reported that her sister and father had disappeared in the waves and had not been seen for several minutes. We immediately launched our rescue boat and began a search of the adjacent waters. The US Coast Guard, the St Louis County Rescue Squad, Duluth Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance all assisted in the search effort. In total, 5 rescue boats from various agencies assisted in the effort.
The rescue efforts were hampered by 5 - 7 foot waves near the shoreline - the juvenile female was located and removed from the water at approximately 17:22, and the adult male was located and removed from the water at 18:04 hours. CPR was initiated on both victims and both were transported to Essentia Health in Duluth. Condition is unknown at this time.
One Duluth firefighter was injured during the second rescue - taking in a large amount of water as he successfully returned the victim to shore. He is currently being evaluated at Essentia Health in Duluth as well.
A rip current warning was issued by the Duluth Fire Department earlier today - to remain in effect until tomorrow morning. During these red flag conditions, signs and flags are posted along Park Point, and the public beaches are closed.
The Duluth Fire Department would like to thank all agencies involved in what became a lengthy, but well coordinated search efforts in difficult weather conditions.
