SUBJECT: Structure Fire at 2625 Swan Lake Road
BY: Assistant Chief Chris Martinson
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 17008387
INCIDENT DATE: 8/9/2017
INCIDENT TIME: 12:29
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2625 Swan Lake Road
The Duluth Fire Department was called to 2625 Swan Lake Road on a report of a detached garage on fire. When Seven engine arrived on scene from the Duluth Heights station they found the garage fully involved and explosions going off due to some gas and or fuel tanks inside the garage. Water supply was an initial concern with the nearest hydrant being over 1000' feet away from the fire so mutual aid was called for additional water from the Air National Guard Fire Department and Hermantown Fire but both departments were cancelled when a water supply was secured. The fire did damage nearby trees but was held to that area and did not spread to nearby structures. The garage and all contents were a total loss. Twenty Duluth firefighters responded to this fire as well as the initial mutual aid response. There were no Firefighter or civilian injuries.
Combined damage to the garage and contents is estimated to be around 250,000 with three classic cars inside, all a total loss.
The Duluth Police Department and Minnesota Power provided service to this emergency scene as well.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshals office and any further information will be released from the Fire Marshals office.
