SUBJECT: Structure Fire at 2008 and 2006 W 4th St
BY: Assistant Chief Clint Reff
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 17004797
INCIDENT DATE: 5/8/2017
INCIDENT TIME: 21:52
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2008 and 2006 W 4th St
The Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2008 W 4th St just before 10:00 PM. While en route, we were notified of possibly trapped occupants. Upon arrival we found heavy fire coming from the rear of the house. The fire had extended to a second house located at 2006 W 4th St. The house at 2006 was vacant and being remodeled as a result of a previous fire.
Due to the size of the fire and the possible rescue, a second alarm for more manpower was called. The primary searches confirmed the houses were void of people. Both houses had to have holes cut in the roofs to let the high interior heat escape. Crews knocked down the main bodies of fire and continued to find hidden pockets of fire in the wall spaces and attics of both houses.
Thirty-six firefighters responded to this call and remained on scene for over three hours. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. Crews did retrieve a pet snake from the 2008 address, unfortunately we were unable to save the snake. Tenants were unable to stay in the home and were being lodge at a local hotel. This service was provided by the Duluth Area Red Cross.
Combined damage is estimated to be $100,000.00 - $120,000.00. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Duluth Fire Department's Fire Marshal's Office. Any further information concerning this fire will be provided by that office.
