At 1045 hours today the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to report of a structure fire in a multi unit apartment building. Upon arrival at a three story 6 unit building, smoke and fire were visible on the exterior second floor balcony. Crews also encountered heavy fire conditions on the 3rd floor and attic. Strong northeast winds accelerated the fire conditions, and crews were driven out of the upper level interior attack more than once by heavy fire prior to extinguishing. The fire was contained to the upper levels and roof area. A total of 7 fire companies responded with 26 firefighters.
One resident of a second floor unit was rescued via ground ladder through an exterior window, and all other occupants were able to evacuate on their own. No civilians were injured, and all pets are accounted for. One firefighter was injured and is being treated at a local hospital. The building in not able to be occupied, and Red Cross placed 3 individuals in temporary housing. Other occupants were able to secure alternative housing.
The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation, and initial damage estimates are set at $75 - $100,000.
Other agencies on scene and assisting include the Duluth Police Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, Duluth Transit Authority, and the Red Cross.
