The Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire that started in a bedroom. The two residents of the home quickly left the residence when the fire could not be put out. The first fire rig on scene from #8 station found heavy smoke conditions throughout the home, as they were finding the seat of the fire it self vented through a window and fire and smoke billowed to the outside. Fire crews found the seat of the fire and quickly knocked it down. The two residents escaped with their pet dog to the outside but unfortunately a pet cat died from the effects of the smoke and fire, firefighters attempted to resuscitate the cat on scene but were unable to save it.
Twenty Firefighters responded to this fire with no civilian or Firefighter injuries. The fire is accidental, a candle in the bedroom is suspected to have started the fire. Initial damage estimates are $80,000 for the structure and contents. The fire was investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshals office and any further information will be provided by the Fire Marshals office.
