City of Duluth seeks input on St. Louis River Corridor Western Waterfront recreation plan
[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation division has been working on a master plan for the Western Waterfront recreation area along the St. Louis River. A public planning process began in August 2016 to determine the future recreational uses of a mostly City-owned, 10-to 12-mile corridor along the St. Louis River between the Irving neighborhood and Chambers Grove Park. The study area includes an existing 3.3 mile long pedestrian trail, a rail bed, and five existing or planned river access points. Currently a portion of the rail bed is leased to a nonprofit for seasonal fee-based rail excursions. Through this planning process, the City is studying the trail, the river access sites along the trail, and whether to continue leasing a portion of the City-owned riverfront for rail use.
The survey is seeking input from the public about their current and potential future uses of the western waterfront area. The survey is accessible by using this web link, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WesternWaterfrontTrailMP and will be open for comments until January 26, 2017.
The project is part of the St. Louis River Corridor Initiative. Draft documents, project objectives and public meeting information can be reviewed online at, http://www.duluthmn.gov/st-louis-river-corridor/western-waterfront-planning/
The plan is anticipated to wrap up in April 2017.
