SUBJECT: Structure Fire at 432 Rustwood Lane
BY: Assistant Chief Chris Martinson

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 17-000226
INCIDENT DATE: 1/7/2017
INCIDENT TIME: 11:22
INCIDENT LOCATION: 432 Rustwood Lane

The Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a garage fire at 432 Rustwood Lane. Six Engine from Lakeside and the Assistant Chief arrived on scene to find an attached garage to the home with heavy smoke coming from the garage and eaves and fire threatening the rest of the structure. Firefighters immediately forced entry to the garage area and began extinguishing the fire. The fire was contained to the garage area but two cars sustained severe damage and the rest of the home was damaged by smoke as well.

The two residents had evacuated the home initially but one had to retrieve the other as one was trying to put out the fire and both suffered some smoke inhalation and one had burned hair and other possible burns. They both were treated on scene by Duluth Firefighters and an ambulance was called as well to eventually transport them both to Essentia for further treatment. There were no other injuries to the 21 firefighters that responded.

Initial estimates to the structure and contents are $150,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and any further information will be released by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.

The Duluth Fire Department would like to strongly remind people that if you have a fire in your home to get out as fast as you can and never re-enter the home for anything. Please practice an exit drill in your home so you know what to do if you have a fire. Please contact the Duluth Fire Department with any question about fire drills in your home.
