City and Community to Celebrate Piedmont Community Recreation Area Improvements

December 3, 2016 at 1:00 PM

[Duluth, MN] - Mayor Emily Larson will join members of the Piedmont Heights Community Club, City Parks and Recreation staff, and neighbors to celebrate the completion of the first of two phases of improvements to the Piedmont Community Recreation Area, a project of the St. Louis River Corridor Initiative. Community members will gather at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 3rd at the Piedmont Community Recreation Area, located at 2302 West 23rd Street.

The Community Club has been able to leverage $40,000 to date in grants, private donations, and in-kind services to supplement the grant from the City's St. Louis River Corridor Initiative Neighborhood Park Grant Fund. This first phase of the project includes stormwater improvements, accessible sidewalks, improved lower ice rink, restoring native vegetation, improvements to the building, and new signage totaling approximately $75,000.

Mayor Larson, Tim Doyle (Piedmont Heights Community Club), and other community representatives will make brief remarks.

The Neighborhood Park Grant Fund is designated to help the City of Duluth accomplish the following six goals in the qualifying parks:

1. Build on and support environmental restoration
2. Enrich neighborhood quality of life
3. Attract new residents to buy homes in St. Louis River Corridor neighborhoods
4. Establish St. Louis River Corridor as major visitor destination
5. Stimulate place-appropriate economic development
6. Leverage additional funding
