NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire @4738 Matterhorn Circle
CASE NO.: 16-2656
INCIDENT DATE: 3/19/2016
INCIDENT TIME: 0752
INCIDENT LOCATION: 4738 Matterhorn Circle

At 0752 am on Saturday March 19th, 2016 the Duluth Fire Department responded to a townhouse fire at 4738 Matterhorn Circle. Upon arrival the fire dept. received information of a person still inside the house.  Fire was seen on the first floor entry of the two-story house. Crews entered the front of the residence and knocked down the fire while searching for the occupant.

The occupant was found inside the rear of the house and removed to the waiting ambulance. The patient was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Crews continued overhaul of the home. During the secondary search a dog and cat were found. The dog was given oxygen and transported to a local vet. The outdoor cat escaped the house to the area behind the house.

20 firefighters responded to the call and remained on scene for two hours. There were no firefighter injuries and no further information regarding the patient. The cause of the fire was determined to be improper disposal of cigarette butts. Damage is estimated to be $7000.00.

The Duluth Fire Department would like to remind residents of the need for proper extinguishment of smoking materials. The use of certified cigarette receptacles are the best approach for the handling of cigarette butts.
