Public Meeting to Discuss Vision for a 30 acre Park in West Duluth

(A St. Louis River Corridor Project)

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth invites the public to attend a community meeting to discuss the formation of a 30 acre multi-use park informally called Quarry Park. Quarry Park refers to the abandoned quarry property located below Skyline Parkway in West Duluth, and above the neighborhood between 46th Avenue West and 59th Avenue West. This project is a component of the St. Louis River Corridor Initiative.

The public meeting will take place on:

Thursday, January 14

5:30-7:00 pm

Merritt Community Center,  4017 W 7th Street

The purpose of the meeting is to introduce the Quarry Park project to the public and gain community input in the master planning process to help guide the future design and use of the park. Informally, since its abandonment, the quarry has been a location for locals to walk dogs, hike, picnic and enjoy a stunning view of Duluth. The quarry’s reputation as a steep and spectacular climbing location has been augmented by the focused development of mixed climbing routes. Today, it is a premier site and training ground for mixed climbing throughout the winter months.  The quarry is located adjacent to Brewer Park and Bellvue Park, two existing parks along Skyline Parkway.

Anyone unable to attend this meeting, may email comments to Lisa Luokkala, Project Coordinator, at lluokkala@duluthmn.gov or call at (218)730-4312.

About

St. Louis River Corridor Initiative – Connecting People to the River

The St. Louis River Corridor Initiative invests in public park and trail improvements from Lincoln Park to the Fond du Lac neighborhood.

The overall goals of the Initiative are to support the natural environment, enrich neighborhood quality of life, attract new home buyers, establish new visitor destinations and stimulate appropriate development.

Initiative projects are funded in part by $18 million in bonds, collected through the ½ and ½ tourism tax approved by the Minnesota Legislature in 2014. These funds will leverage additional dollars through community partnerships and grants.
