Cross City Trail Mini-Master Plan Meeting Scheduled for December 10
(A St. Louis River Corridor Project)

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Division is preparing a Mini-Master Plan for the Cross City Trail, a continuous multi-use trail that will extend from the western end of the Lakewalk to Becks Road. The Mini-Master plan will guide trail development over the next 25+ years and will allow the City to seek Regional Trail Designation from the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission, in order to apply for Legacy Grant funding. The meeting will take place on December 10, 2015 at Denfeld High School, 401 N. 44th Ave West in the Commons area from 5-7 PM.

The Mini-master planning began in May 2015 and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016. There will be two opportunities for public input. The first will be during the December 10 meeting to provide an overview of the project and receive public input on issues, opportunities and trail alignment alternatives. The second public input session will be during the early part of 2016 to review the draft master plan. The final Mini-Master Plan will be presented to the Parks Commission for approval and will need City Council approval before implementation.

Cross City Trail project goals include identification of an alignment to connect the Lakewalk to the Munger Trail with a paved, non-motorized trail for walking, general biking and connecting Spirit Mountain to Becks Road along the former Duluth Winnipeg Pacific (DWP) rail corridor with a natural surface. The project webpage provides additional information and an online comment form at http://www.duluthmn.gov/st-louis-river-corridor/cross-city-trail/.

The City encourages public participation at the meetings. This project is part of the St. Louis River Corridor Initiative.

The St. Louis River Corridor Initiative – Connecting People to the River

The St. Louis River Corridor Initiative invests in public park and trail improvements from Lincoln Park to the Fond du Lac neighborhood.

The overall goals of the Initiative are to support the natural environment, enrich neighborhood quality of life, attract new home buyers, establish new visitor destinations and stimulate appropriate development.

Initiative projects are funded in part by $18 million in bonds, collected through the ½ and ½ tourism tax approved by the Minnesota Legislature in 2014. These funds will leverage additional dollars through community partnerships and grants. Learn more about the Initiative at http://www.duluthmn.gov/st-louis-river-corridor/
