SUBJECT: 3/7/10 Building Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Erik Simonson
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Building Fire
CASE NO.: 10-001535
INCIDENT DATE: 3/7/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 0237
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2416 London Road
At approximately 2:30 AM, a passerby reported smoke coming from the roof of the Edgewater Resort and Waterpark. Initial arriving fire companies reported heavy smoke showing from the roof of the east end of the complex.
Duluth Police Department arrived on scene and assisted with evacuating the entire east section of the hotel. Most guests were moved to adjacent buildings or their personal vehicles during the fire. All guests were able to return to their rooms within an hour of the initial alarm.
Due to the location of the fire, and unknown extent, two additional fire companies were called to the scene. In total, there were four engine companies, two truck companies, one heavy rescue company and one Quint company on the scene for approximately 90 minutes.
The main fire was contained to a large HVAC unit on the roof above the water park. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading into the building, however there was significant smoke in both the waterpark area and the adjacent hotel corridors that was removed by firefighters.
Initial damage estimates are set at $37,500. The cause of this fire is unknown at this time, and will be under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal.
