Public Invited to Attend October 20th Informational Meeting on Western Waterfront Trail
The public is invited to attend an informational meeting on maintenance and improvements of the Western Waterfront Trail and a plan for habitat restoration along the corridor.
The public meeting will take place on:
Tuesday, October 20th from 5:00-6:30 pm
Morgan Park Community Recreation Center
1242 88th Ave West
Option Walking Tour:
City staff will lead a short walking tour of the Western Waterfront Trail prior to the public meeting from 4:00 to 4:30 PM. Meet at the end of Pulaski Street on the far end of Indian Point Campground. We will be looking at existing trail conditions along with native and invasive vegetation in the corridor.
Part I: Trail Renewal
The City of Duluth, with funding assistance from Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program, will restore the Western Waterfront Trail by resurfacing the trail and boardwalks, repairing and improving culverts, and making Universal Design upgrades.
Part II: Habitat Restoration
The City of Duluth secured a Conservation Partners Legacy grant to protect and restore the native plant diversity and habitat structure on 76 acres along the Western Waterfront. The project begins with site assessments and the completion of a habitat restoration plan. Removal and management of invasive species, along with replanting terrestrial native plant communities are key elements of the plan.
In addition, Duluth Invaders, a service initiative to mobilize citizen volunteers to assist in controlling and removing terrestrial invasive plants, as well as restore the lands damaged by them within the City of Duluth will be tabling at the event.
The projects are part of the larger St. Louis River Corridor initiative made possible by the City of Duluth ½ and ½ Tourism Tax Fund. To learn more about all the projects that make up the St. Louis River Corridor initiative visit: http://www.duluthmn.gov/st-louis-river-corridor/
