SUBJECT: Warehouse Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Dennis Edwards
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Fire
CASE NO.: 8155
INCIDENT DATE: 8/19/2015
INCIDENT TIME: 1753
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1210 Port Terminal Dr
On Wednesday August 19th at 1753 the Duluth Fire Department responded to a water flow automatic alarm at 1210 Port Terminal Drive. Number 2 Engine from Lincoln Park was first to arrive and found the entire 180,000Ft2 building charged with smoke. Fire Crews were able to locate the fire that was contained by the automatic sprinkler system. Firefighters were able to then completely extinguish the fire within nine minutes of arrival.
The fire is under investigation but at this time it is not suspicious and appears to be electrical in nature. The fire destroyed one electric vehicle, damaged another and extended to the structure itself. There was also some water damage to stored building materials that was kept to a minimum by the Fire Department shutting down the sprinkler system when the fire was out. Crews remained on scene for another 90 minutes removing standing water and smoke from the building. Initial damage estimates are $30,000 to the structure, vehicles and building materials.
24 Firefighters responded to the fire from the Downtown, Lincoln Park, UMD, and Spirit Valley Fire Stations. This is an excellent example of a working automatic alarm system and automatic sprinkler system saving possibly over a million dollars of fire loss.
