Duluth Traverse Trail to Expand This Year
[Duluth, MN] - Since 2008, the City of Duluth Parks Division has been working closely with the public on future trail connections across the City. The City is excited to announce the upcoming construction of two new segments of the Duluth Traverse Trail, to be built in partnership with the Cyclists of Gitchee Gummee (COGGS).
The City was awarded a Federal Recreational Trails Grant of $96,750 to construct an approximate 2.5 miles of new natural surface, multi-use singletrack trail purpose built for mountain biking in the area below Skyline Pkwy, around Enger Park and to the west of the Park. This route was approved in the 2008 Trail and Bikeway Plan. Typical working hours are Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 8 PM. Due to the tight timeline of the project the contract may also be working on the weekends between the hours of 8 AM to 8PM to make up for weather delays during the week. Construction is not expected to affect the public’s use of existing trails in Enger Park and is anticipated to be completed by early November 2015.
A second extension of the Duluth Traverse will also commence next week at the western edge of Hawk Ridge. The construction of the 0.75 mile multiuse natural surface trail will begin at the existing terminus of a current Hawk Ridge trail and end at the corner of Colby Ave and Amity Street. COGGS will be constructing this trail in partnership with the City using privately donated funds. A spur of the Superior Hiking Trail crosses through this project area but the work will not impact trail use. Workers will be on site from 7AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. Projected completion is expected to be early September.
To date, the City of Duluth has worked with COGGS to construct about 60 miles of the anticipated 100+ mile singletrack trail all within an urban environment. The Duluth Traverse is a sustainable multi-use natural surface trail that connects neighborhoods and parks along Duluth’s rocky ridgeline. It is open to all non-motorized trail users and is typically not wider than 4 feet when constructed and in time narrows to the width of a hiking trail due to intentional vegetation encroachment.
