SUBJECT: Lincoln Park Structure Fire
BY: D. Edwards, Assistant Fire Chief

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 7575
INCIDENT DATE: 8/5/2015
INCIDENT TIME: 0100
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2714 W 3rd St

At 1 am on August 5th, 2015 the Duluth Fire Department responded to a Lincoln Park house fire at 2714 W 3rd St.  The original 911 call from the resident was for law enforcement to respond to a burglary in progress.  The resident reported hearing someone trying to enter through the back door.  The noises were most likely caused by the basement fire. The lone resident then exited through the front door where she was met by Duluth Police Department officers.  The officers then discovered the house was filled with smoke and requested the fire department to respond.

Number 2 Engine from the Lincoln Park Fire Station arrived within 2 minutes and reported a working fire.  The 2 Engine Crew entered the building to conduct primary search and fire control.  They were able to locate the fire in the basement as it was extending up the stairway to the kitchen.  The fire was quickly extinguished and ventilation, salvage and overhaul continued for another 90 minutes.

Assistant Chief Dennis Edwards credits quick response and investigation by the Duluth Police Department along with an aggressive interior fire attack by the Station 2 firefighters as major factors in keeping the fire damage to a minimum.  The DFD was also assisted by Gold Cross ambulance and Minnesota Power.

The resident was transported to a hospital for minor injuries suffered from a fall while escaping the house.  Initial damage estimates are $10,000 to the structure and $5000 to contents mostly due to smoke damage.  Twenty firefighters responded to the fire from the Lincoln Park, Downtown, Spirit Valley and Miller Hill fire stations.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the DFD Fire Marshal's office.
