NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 7547
INCIDENT DATE: 8/4/2015
INCIDENT TIME: 1406
INCIDENT LOCATION: 105 97th Ave W

Tuesday August 4th at 2:06 pm the Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 105 97th Ave West.  Number 10 Engine from the Gary Fire Station was first to arrive within three minutes and reported fire on the front porch extending up the side and into the eaves of the house.  The 10 Engine crew made a quick attack and knocked down the exterior fire.  They then advanced into the structure and found the fire had extended to the roof and attic space.  Most of the fire was contained within the first few minutes but the DFD stayed on the scene for 3 hours completing salvage and overhaul.  There were many enclosed attic spaces that had to be opened to extinguish remaining hot spots.

There was an adult and two infants in the home at the time of the fire.  The adult was able to escape with the two infants and report the fire.  Firefighters were able to rescue two dogs and four cats from the fire unharmed.

The Duluth Fire Department was assisted by the Duluth Police Department and the residents of the home are being assisted by the Red Cross.

19 Firefighters responded to the fire from the Gary, Spirit Valley, Lincoln Park and Downtown fire stations.  The Fire Marshal has investigated the fire and determined the cause to be accidental improper disposal of smoking materials.  Initial damage estimates are $30,000 to the structure and $20,000 to contents.
