Duluth Parks to Hold Second West Duluth Sports Corridor
Open House

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Division invites the public to a second public open house to obtain input on concept alternatives for the West Duluth Sports Corridor, an area which includes Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium, and the Duluth Heritage Sports Center. The open house is part of an eight month mini-master planning process for the Sports Corridor.

The master plan will identify improvements to establish this area as a premier athletic destination for northeast Minnesota. When completed, the mini-master plan will:
  • Recommend improvements to Wheeler Athletic complex and field house.
  • Address improvements to the Wade Stadium complex. The mini master plan will address the baseball and softball fields south of the stadium, parking, and circulation. Stadium improvements are being addressed in a separate study.
  • Identify connectivity, signage, and identity improvements needed to create a cohesive corridor connecting Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium Complex, and the Heritage Sports Center.
  • Inform the preferred alignment for the Cross City Trail between the Heritage Sports Center and Wheeler Athletic Complex. The Cross City Trail is a paved trail connection between the Lakewalk and the Munger Trails.
The open house will allow the public to learn about and comment on concept alternatives exploring a range of potential reinvestments to existing facilities as well as new capital improvements.  A brief overview presentation will be provided at the beginning of the open house, but the remainder of the meeting will be reserved for feedback and discussion with the planning team. For more information, visit the project website at  www.duluthmn.gov/parks/parks-planning/west-duluth-sports-corridor/

The concept alternatives have been posted on the West Duluth Sports Corridor webpage and are available for comment until May 8th. The results of the needs assessment questionnaire are also available on that webpage. The comments received at the open house will help shape the mini-master plan and future improvements.
