 At 11:01 pm on Friday Jan 30th, 2015, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a basement fire at 2022 1/2 E 2nd St.

Heavy smoke was seen coming from the first floor of the side by side triplex. Firefighters also encountered flames coming from the basement level of the rear of the house. The fire was extending throughout the interior of the home. Fire crews attacked the fire from the basement and first floor. Fire was kept out of the adjoining units. The other units suffered some smoke damage as a result of the fire. A search was initiated for an occupant who was unaccounted for. The occupant was safely located outside of the house.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire, with all occupants making it outside prior to our arrival. Two cats did not survive the fire. There were no injuries to civilians or fire fighters. 21 firefighters responded from Woodland, Lakeside, U.M.D. and HQ Fire Stations.

Damage is estimated at $65,000.00

The Duluth Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating the cause of the fire. No further information is available at this time.
