NATURE OF INCIDENT: structure fire @1106 W. Third St.

INCIDENT DATE: 1/1/2015
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1106 W. Third St.
What initially was a fire response for a chimney fire, quickly turned into a structure fire and full alarm response. The first fire rig on the scene from Headquarters, immediately realized that with the amount of smoke, that the response would have to be upgraded, when the Assistant Fire Chief came on scene, there was very heavy smoke coming from the Bravo or East side of the structure and from the roof edges. One Tower was already making it's way to the roof to vent out the hot gases and smoke. Fire crews made their way into the structure with hose lines to begin extinguishment, searches were also made to make sure there were no trapped occupants. The homeowners were home at the time and were trying to clear the chimney, they were accounted for and looked at by Gold Cross ambulance. There was heavy fire damage on the first floor and attic. Twenty firefighters responded to this fire and brought it under control. The fire is being investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office. Damage estimates are around $50,000 dollars. The Fire Department was also assisted by Duluth Police and Duluth Street maintenance.
