Duluth Summer 2014 Activities for Kids and Families
 
[Duluth, MN] – Summer in Duluth is in full swing though it may not feel like it with the current fog and cooler temperatures. Nevertheless, there are numerous fun activities planned for people of all ages through the Duluth Parks and Recreation division and community partners. The summer line up is filled with lots of free programs that promote active and healthy lifestyles by exploring our city parks and facilities. 
 
Summer Turf Time at the Heritage Sports Center
 
This is an opportunity for youth ages 7- 17 from across the city to come socialize and participate in organized game activities at the Duluth Heritage Center's Indoor Turf Facility. Parks staff and volunteers will assist youth in character development activities and sports oriented games on the indoor Turf Facility. Games such as kickball, flag football, disc golf, soccer parachutes, relays and obstacle courses will be played. Participants will be divided by age, ability and interests. Parents / Guardians must register children on-site and are encouraged to participate.
 
A healthy snack will be provided after each session. This activity is FREE through the Parks and Recreation division.  The Heritage Sports Center is located at 120 South 30th Avenue West. 
 
Summer Dates:  Now through August 21st 
Time:  Thursdays, 3:00-5:00 P.M.
Ages:  7-17
Cost:  Free
Contact: Call 730-4322 for more information. Call-in reservation is suggested to save you a spot and a registration/permission form must be signed the day of the activity. 
 
Parks and Recreation Summer Heritage Skating
 
The Parks and Recreation sponsored summer skating sessions will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. every Wednesday until the end of August at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center located at 120 South 30th Avenue West. These sessions are free and open to the public for pleasure skating. Please bring your own skates.
 
 
Fun Opportunities for Groups and Families at the Bayfront Festival Park and the Bayfront Family Center!
 
Bayfront Festival Park is a great place for people to go with friends and family almost any time! Take a walk around the festival grounds, stage and past the harbor. Play on the biggest, most innovative playground in Duluth...Enjoy one of the many fun events planned throughout the summer such as FourthFest, musical performances, or the Lake Superior Harvest Festival. Check out the Family Center, open Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., which has sheltered seating, extra bathrooms and vending machines. Recreational equipment is available for people to use, free of charge, and includes disc golf, kites, volleyball sets, kick balls, croquet and more.

Dance and sing along to great music at the Chester Creek Concert series every Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket and relax in the beautiful surroundings of Chester Bowl Park. For weather related concert updates call 730-4326. Please be aware that Skyline Parkway road repairs will take place on June 25 and last through the fall. The eastern segment (from Chester Park Drive leading into the park) will be closed until August 11, but the west entrance will be accessible. After completion of repairs on the east end, bridge work will require closure of the Parkway on the western segment leading into the park entrance but access will be open from the east.     
 
 
Movies in the Park are scheduled for every Friday evening in Leif Erikson Park, accessible from the Lakewalk trail. This is a free public event. The first movie is scheduled for July 11 at 9:00 p.m. featuring the animated movie, Brave. Bring your own chairs or blankets. Park Point Sand Modeling Contest and Water Safety Expo
 
Put on your creative hats and join others in the Park Point Sand Modeling Contest on July 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Games, exercises, and water safety information will be provided by several organizations to ensure everyone has a fun and safe summer on the beach. The event is free to the public. Come out to the Park Point Beach House for a great day of events!
 
Play Gym at Duluth Heights
 
Unstructured, free, rain or shine playtime for preschoolers. Play Gym is held every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Duluth Heights Community Recreation Center, 33 Mulberry St. For more information, call 730-4322.
