NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire @1317 E 2nd St
CASE NO.: 14-4311
INCIDENT DATE: 5/20/2014
INCIDENT TIME: 12:27 AM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1317 E 2nd St

At 12:27 am on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a porch on fire at 1317 E 2nd St.  Upon arrival, crews found a corner of an uncovered front porch burning at a 5 unit -3 story apartment building.  As crews began to attack the fire, it became apparent that the fire had spread into the 2nd and 3rd floor of the structure.

FIre attack continued both inside and outside the structure.  In addition, there was initially a concern that tenants might still be in the building.  Crews searching and attacking the fire encountered heavy smoke and significant fire on both the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building.

All occupants at home when the fire began had safely evacuated.  However, a cat died in the fire.

The fire heavily damaged the front porch, a second floor apartment and a portion of the 3rd floor attic space. There was significant smoke damage to the entire 2nd and 3rd floor.  Water damage occurred throughout the building.

20 firefighters from the Downtown, UMD, and Lakeside fire stations initially responded to the fire. Due to concerns about the rapidly spreading fire and efforts to search the building, a second alarm was called bringing an additional 7 firefighters to the scene.

Crews remained on the scene for more than 3 hours.  Initial damage is estimated at $100,000.00 to structure and contents. There were no injuries to firefighters or occupants.

Several occupants were assisted by the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
