At 1:06 pm, on Friday, April 18, 2014, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to multiple reports of a house on fire at 603 N 23rd Ave West in Duluth's Lincoln Park neighborhood.
The Captain from the first fire apparatus on the scene reported fire coming from the front door and a south side facing window as well as heavy smoke from the rear of the house. This crew entered the front door and began extinguishing the fire.
Crews from Headquarters arrived to find a male victim (vicim #1) hanging out a 1st floor window at the rear of the house. A ladder was used to help this conscious victim out of the window. This male victim reported there was a second person still inside the house on the second floor.
Interior fire crews made their way to the secondf floor to begin searching for victim #2. Several ladders were placed to the second floor and crews at the rear entered windows on the second floor to also search for victim #2.
A firefighter who entered a second floor rear bedroom from a ladder located victim # 2 in heavy smoke and was assisted by an interior crew removing this victim to the rear porch.
Duluth firefighters and Gold Cross ambulance paramedics assisted with the care of victim # 2.
Victim #2 was transported to St.. Mary's Medical Center by ambulance. Victim # 1 was transported to St. Mary's by Duluth Police.
Patient information and condition is not available at this time.
The fire was declared under control approximately 25 minutes after arrival. Tthere was extensive fire damage to the 1st floor and into the second floor. There was heavy smoke damage throughout the house.
Initial damage to structure and contents is estimated at more than $30,000.00
The Duluth Fire Marshal's office and Duluth Police Department are on scene investigating the origin and cause of this fire.
20 firefighters initially responded to this call from stations in Lincoln Park, Downtown, and West Duluth.
Addiditional firefighters were called to assist when on scene crews became involved with patient care.
Fire crews remained on the scene for more than 2 hours and will be returning for additional salvage and overhaul work after investigators complete their scene work.
