At 4:27 a.m., on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, a Duluth Fire Engine was dispatched to investigate smoke in the area of 2nd avenue east and 2nd street. Upon arrival in the area, 1 Engine saw smoke coming from a commercial building at 211 E 2nd ST.
1 Engine requested a full fire alarm response which brought and an additional 5 fire apparatus and a total of 22 personnel to the scene.
Shortly after arrival, fire erupted from the top of one of the large commercial garage doors facing 2nd avenue east. An additional 2 fire rigs and 8 personnel were called to the scene. In addition, the department safety officer, deputy chief, and an off-duty assistant chief were called back.
Crews used gas powered saws to breach garage doors and provide access to the fire. Large volumes of water were applied to extinguish the fire. Crews also cut a hole in the rear wall of the garage portion of the building to assist in ve3ntilation and fire control.
This building is home to 3 different occupants including RLBCI (Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indian Outreach Center), a microbrewery operation (Dubrue) and an auto repair shop (Johnson’s Auto Repair)
The fire was confined to the body shop area in the center of the building. There was smoke damage throughout the building.
Duluth Fire Dept. was assisted by the Air National Guard FD. Duluth Police Dept., and the U.S. Border Patrol.
1 firefighter suffered a minor shoulder injury.
The Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
Initial Damage Estimate in excess of $150,000 to the structure and contents.
