At 8:59 a.m., on February 14, 2014, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a report from a neighbor of smoke coming from the roof at 407 Stroll Avenue in the Duluth Heights neighborhood. Upon arrival, the fire department found heavy smoke coming from the roof and rear of a single story, single family house.
Firefighters entered the home and quickly knocked down fire in the kitchen. Firefighters also cut a hole in the roof to ventilate heat and smoke.
The fire was quickly extinguished. Crews remained on the scene for 2 1/2 hours to assist the fire investigator, perform overhaul, and secure the home.
The occupant of the structure had left approximately 1 hour before the fire was reported.
The fire began in the kitchen, spread into the dining room and roof structure. There was significant heat and smoke damage throughout the house. An initial damage estimate is $80,000 for structure and contents.
A dog in the basement of the home was not injured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office.
